CREDIT CARDS recommended

To start off, I am a quite fussy credit cards user. I prefer a card which provides cash backs, point rewards as well as premium lounge entry at both local & international airports. Below are the cards (in ranking) that i used for the past few years and I will continue using it until they take away the benefit.

1. Public Bank Visa Signature Credit Card

Benefits of this card:

Cash back 6% (capped at RM38)

• Cash back category: Groceries, Dining and Online Purchases
• I personally prefer to top up my BigPay card using this card to fully maximize the cash back without any headache to record.

Rewards

• 1 point on every RM1 on on all retail spends.
• VIP Points are redeemable for Air Miles, voucher, other goods and services from Public Bank Preferred Redemption Rewards Catalogue.

Travel

• 2x complimentary access to Plaza Premium Lounge in Malaysia
• travel insurance worth RM500,000 is complimentary when you charge all your travel arrangements to your card.

2. Public Bank Quantum MasterCard

Cash back 5% (capped at RM30)

• Online shopping (this include top up to BigPay)

• 1 point on every RM1 for local retail transactions

• 2 points on every RM1 for overseas retail transactions

Premium

Get a complimentary visa Public Bank Quantum Visa credit card when you sign up. However, I didn’t activate the Visa card when I receive it because the benefits of this visa card don’t fulfill my requirements.

3. BigPay prepaid mastercard

The benefits of BigPay:

Benefits 1 : Everyday Purchase in Malaysia

BigPay is a prepaid Mastercard, hence, it’s generally accepted everywhere in Malaysia. I am having it as my main card and I pay-wave whenever I shop. To make sure it has sufficient fund for me to swipe, I usually top up it with my pbe credit cards early of each month.

Benefits 2 : Foreign Use while travelling overseas

I can withdraw money from ATMs at any countries. BigPay will give us the real exchange rate with the only RM10 charge and the foreign card fee that the ATM charges. Hence, I don’t have to go around to find out which money ex-changer offer the best rate.

Be careful when you use foreign ATMs. When you input how much money you want to withdraw, they will ask if you want to instantly get charged in Malaysian Ringgit instead of paying a conversion fee.

DON'T DO IT! The ATM will actually charge 3-5% which is way too expensive!!

Benefits 3 : Combine with e-wallets for enhanced benefits

I combine BigPay with other e wallets for more benefits. I personally top up my BOOST using my BigPay Mastercard, where I get BIG points that allow me to redeem for Air Asia items or flight fees, and I can continue to collect more BOOST coins that I can redeem for BOOST wallets money or other rewards like Shopee vouchers, smartphone etc..

Benefits 4 : Save money on AirAsia flights and earn BIG Points

AirAsia offers a bunch of discounts when you pay with BigPay. They won’t charge any processing fees when buying tickets. On top of that, they will give a small discounts if you decide to pre-book your meals on an AirAsia flight with BigPay. All these transactions with earn AirAsia BIG Points.

In BigPay, you can search by name (instead of entering an account number), sending money can be done within seconds.

Monthly service fee 

A RM2.50 monthly service fee if you don’t use the card that particular month

ATM withdrawal fees

Although they currently only charge RM10 as the fee for withdrawing cash in a foreign country, they do write that they will charge 2% of the total withdrawal in the future, which making it more expensive than our traditional bank card. 

Currency Conversion Fee

They currently only pass the costs that they incur when making a foreign purchase, but in the future, they might charge 1% of the total cost.

Cross border transaction fee

Waived until further notice

Once they introduce these fees, it will most likely be enough for them to sustain themselves and make a handsome profit. However, it might not be good for us. But this future, it doesn’t matter right now because there will be more better alternatives due to competitions that we can switch to. Hence, we got to take full advantage of what they are offering right now.
