OTC Treatment for Gum Bleeding


Gum bleeding is a common problem in elderly. It is usually caused by bacteria which induce inflammation of gum. This is called “gingivitis” where the gum is red, swollen, painful and bleeding.

In general, gum bleeding can be divided into passive and spontaneous bleeding.

A passive bleeding: It happens when the gum capillaries rupture during brushing, eating and sucking. Blood produced by gums bleeding can be found in the saliva, it will stain the food or the toothbrush. This kind of bleeding can be relieved by gargle with cold water.

A spontaneous bleeding: A mild stimulation or sometimes even without stimulation can cause heavy gum bleeding. This will be a very heavy bleeding with large amount of blood and it is very difficult to manage. This kind of symptoms is often related to underlying diseases of the patients.

Bad breath often accompanied by bleeding gums.

Other than some painkillers and anti-swelling drugs like papain, there are many OTC treatments available for this kind of problem.

OTC treatment for gum bleeding:
1. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) - Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin. In other words, our body does not store it. We have to get what we need from food or supplements.  We need vitamin C for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of your body.
Vitamin C can be derived from fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin C supplement is the easiest way to get high dose vitamin c. Take 500mg - 1000mg daily to get best results.
2. Sensodyne Gum care toothpaste – It is a Fluoride toothpaste which prevent decay. Flouride is also an antimicrobial agent which with twice daily brushing helps to remove plaque above the gum line, and works to maintain healthy gums. Plaque buildup can lead to gum recession and increased tooth sensitivity. Its minty taste keeps mouth feeling clean and fresh. 

3. Parodontax toothpaste - It contains Sodium Bicarbonate which, with brushing, helps remove the plaque bacteria that cause the initial inflammation and bleeding gums. It contains mineral salt and herbal extracts that give it a unique taste.
